Free eSeminar: Understanding youth involvement in the 2011 UK riots (March 29, 2011)

You’re invited to go behind the scenes with Britain’s leading independent center for social research, the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). Find out how a team of researchers explored the triggers of youth involvement in the August 2011 riots from the perspective of those involved and affected.

The project director, Gareth Morrell will take you behind the research and be available for questions. During the eSeminar Gareth will cover:

The research approach and methods employed in the study:

  • How the team managed and analyzed the qualitative data
  • The challenges the team of researchers faced, such as defining and accessing the sample and the sensitivity of the issue
  • A summary of key findings on the involvement of young people and what affected decisions made on the nights of the riots
  • How the team was able to deliver a report to the UK Cabinet Office in a timely manner
  • How the team was able to ensure robust, evidence-based analysis was available to government departments and the Independent Riots Communities and Victims Panel
