Where do you want your mind today…over a life time?

If you could draw a line where one side represented a state you would like to experience more in your life, and one side represented a state you wanted to experience less in your life, what would those two states be for you? Or even a state that would be helpful for an upcoming meeting, interview, speaking engagement, or at home?

I completed this exercise two different times. I had a specific event coming up in mind, where having a more positive state would be helpful. This exercise guides you to ‘walk’ one step at a time to the state you want to experience more in your life. The first time I wanted to have more courage and confidence, and less fear. What a fascinating experience. For me, I couldn’t walk all the way fully into confidence! I literally felt glued to the floor and could not take the final step. And that is, was, okay! I went as far as I could, and felt what confidence and courage would feel like – amazing. The opposite, fear, which I could see from the distance, is not where I wanted to be, and I could feel that too. Knowing that we can move our mind from one state to another, by walking towards it slowly and intentionally in this exercise, is a powerful experience.

Another insight that emerged for me, as I walked closer to confidence and courage, is that fear appeared alongside me. And instead of being afraid of fear, ‘fear’ wanted to join me on my walk to courage and confidence. It reminded me that fear in the past has helped me get through some difficult times. I was holding both states – fear and courage – at those difficult times; fear did not prevent me from moving forward. It was as if fear said, ‘hey, I’m going to be here beside you. I am not going to hold you back, but I want to take you there to the other side, confidence and courage.” It was as if I needed it there, at those times.

Sometimes the states that may grip us or plague us, have good intentions for us. What are some emotional states you experience, both positive and negative? What would you like to experience more or less in your life, to create more or less of what you envision for yourself, your life? = )

PS: The second time around, I realized that I wanted to experience less doubt. When asked what the opposite of doubt would be for me, the word trust emerged. I wanted to trust myself more, and doubt myself less…
